From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is a civilian intelligence agency of the United States government responsible for providing national security intelligence to senior United States policymakers. The CIA also engages in covert activities at the request of the President of the United States of America. It is the successor of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) formed during World War II to coordinate espionage activities behind enemy lines for the branches of the United States military. The National Security Act of 1947 established the CIA, affording it "no police or law enforcement functions, either at home or abroad". One year later, this mandate was expanded to include "sabotage, anti-sabotage, demolition and evacuation measures...subversion [and] assistance to underground resistance movements, guerrillas and refugee liberation movements, and support of indigenous anti-communist elements in threatened countries of the free world". The CIA's primary function is to collect information about foreign governments, corporations, and individuals, and to advise public policymakers. The agency conducts covert operations and paramilitary actions, and exerts foreign political influence through its Special Activities Division. The CIA and its responsibilities changed markedly in 2004. Before December 2004, the CIA was the main intelligence organization of the US government; it coordinated and oversaw not only its own activities but also the activities of the US Intelligence Community (IC) as a whole. The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 created the office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), which took over some of the government and IC-wide functions. The DNI manages the IC and therefore the intelligence cycle. The functions that moved to the DNI included the preparation of estimates of the consolidated opinion of the 16 IC agencies, and the preparation of briefings for the President of the United States. Today, the CIA still has a number of functions in common with other countries' intelligence agencies; see Relationships with foreign intelligence agencies. The CIA's headquarters is in Langley in McLean, unincorporated Fairfax County, Virginia, a few miles west of Washington, D.C. along the Potomac River. Sometimes, the CIA is referred to euphemistically in government and military parlance as Other Government Agencies (OGA), particularly when its operations in a particular area are an open secret. Other terms include The Company, and The Agency. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What Military Branch should I join for CIA Clandestine Service/ ROTC? Q. Hi I'm a Senior in High School and I finally decided that i want to go into CIA Clandestine Services. Just wanted to know what Military Branch would be best for the CIA, also I'm planning on applying for ROTC from the Branch I choose. Also, what should I major in college? I have to choose some technical major or Science for ROTC, I was thinking Physics or some type of engineering major. Asked by xllsiren - Sat Aug 8 03:46:00 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Doesn't matter on the branch... They only look through Special Operations and Special Forces. Basically, they need to have 300 PFT (which most guys do in SpecOps), 2nd or 3rd language speaking skills, well-educated (they mostly look for college grads), no waivers for drugs, Top Secret Clearance... Basically the Special Operations community creates a Pool of possible recruits for the CIA. Answered by death_is_close123 - Sat Aug 8 03:52:14 2009 What's the difference between FBI, CIA and police? Q. I keep hearing these names in movies all the time. However it's hard for me to differentiate between FBI and CIA although I did read about them on the Internet. Also what's the link between the police and FBI? If someone wants to report a crime do they call police or FBI? Or does it depend on crime? Asked by eguru - Fri Apr 10 17:25:52 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. The FBI investigates any Federal crime. Other federal agencies specialize in specific Federal crimes such as the ATF and the DEA. The CIA gathers information and under its charter assists in secret operations that help the USA and our friends. Of course these powers have been allowed to include the Vietnam War etc. Most CIA or FBI work is spent gathering information and is not glamourous like on TV. The local police investigate any crime in that jurisdiction or links to a crime in a particular jurisdiction such as a criminal on the run etc. The FBI and CIA have been accused of abusing power for political gain as well as police departments as well. Answered by DEE W - Fri Apr 10 17:49:48 2009 Is it a good move to get rid of the CIA detention centers for Terrorist?
Q. The US has stopped running its global network of secret prisons, CIA director Leon Panetta has announced. "CIA no longer operates detention facilities or black sites," Mr Panetta said in a letter to staff. Remaining sites would be decommissioned, he said. President Bush is no longer in charge so all sites will be destroyed on orders of President Obama. The detention facilities were an embarrassment to the United States. A shameful part of history. Asked by We won! 20 Jan 09 (Erudite) - Thu Apr 9 16:34:58 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Oh yes, getting information out of terrorists was so shameful of us.
