What support services are provided to people who are mentally handicapped today?
Q. What support services are provided to people who are mentally handicapped today and how is the service today compared with the service they recieved in the 1930's?
Asked by smilessxoable - Tue Mar 3 21:44:07 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on what the person with a mental disability needs. A vocational rehabilitation counselor will provide available services from their office based on individual assessment of the client's capabilities versus the office resources. But cumulatively, services are much better than in 1930's America. First, people with disabilities are not automatically institutionalized away--out of sight, out of mind. Secondly, they are legally entitled to obtain a free appropriate and quality public education (aka special education) in their local school district. This was unknown in the 1930's. You did not educate people with disabilities because they were not expected to be productive in the public sphere doing anything.

Electrical question...What size should service wires be for 2 one-hundred amp services in a two family house?
Q. I ask that becuase NEC code specifies wire size for services according to amperage for single and multifamily dwellings...but don't specify if you're suppose to add the amperage up if you have more than one service...or the wire size that will accomodate 100 amp service will still be sufficient with another 100 amp service.
Asked by bookums20 - Sun Sep 2 23:42:34 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. this depends on whether both 100 amp services will use the same drop line or will have separate drop lines with separate weather heads...if both of them will be gang mounted with one service head then you will have to use 2/0 copper or 4/0 aluminum...if they are` both going to have there own weather head and services then you would only need 1/0 copper or 2/0 aluminum...plus grounds for both services...

Do social services have the rights to put an elderly person in a home without that persons permission?
Q. My elderly grandma as been in hospital 2 weeks & the doctor agreed to let her home. However the family as been arguing over aftercare arrangements & 1 family involved social services. Social services will be placing my grandma in a residential home but she doesnt want to! Are they aloud to do this? What action can we take to stop this?

A. Even if your grandma gave the family member who wants to put her into a home a medical power of attorney, she can revoke that if she is of sound mind. There is a concern about who will provide adequate care for your grandmother when she comes home from the hospital. Depending on her conditions, provisions can be made for home care. Contact your local senior services office to ask what sort of support they can offer. Does someone need to be with your grandmother all the time? If so, can the ones who want to help her stay at home take turns? Social service people in the hospital seem to want to push the elderly into nursing homes right away. It makes you wonder whether the nursing homes are giving them commissions. When the… [cont.]

What are some of the services in Massachusetts that will dissapear if the income tax is eliminated?
Q. I'm curious what the real impact would be if the income tax is eliminated. Please reply in an objective manner! What services would go? How would these eliminated services be paid for? Why, as a 24-year old, should I WANT to pay income tax for many services that do not benefit me in any way?

A. I pay school taxes and I haven't had a kid in school in forty two years. No country is going to let you pick and choose your tax menu. If you don't benefit from them now you may in the future. Or some other old lady will be paying for your little one to go to school years from now.

What are some lawn maintenance/design services that are not offered much, and people would be willing to pay 4?
Q. We are expanding a lawn maintenance business we already have, and are looking to offer more services. We want to know what people are wanting, specifically services not offered much, because we are wanting to make a profit. Clients are willing to pay a little extra if it's something they want/need done and we are the only business who offer the service. Anyway, it does not even have to be lawn related. Any cool or interesting ideas, that would make our business stand out?

A. not knowing how big your company is and what you are already offering - you could do pruning and hedge trimming - you could offer aerating and leave removal - if you have a good mulcher on your equipment offer to mulch the leaves on the grass they will deteriorate and feed the soil and cut down on the fertilizer need to feed the grass - you could clean gutters - offer your customers whatever they want - people like to deal with one company that do a good job than 2 or 3 company's that will only do one thing

What are the different services you can use for a Toshiba Gigabeat?
Q. I want to get a Toshiba Gigabeat for Christmas. Which services can I get that allow me to download legal music for this player? I don't think iTunes will work and that is what I'm using right now for my iPod. I prefer a company that allows you to pay per song or a company that allows you to pay a certain price per month and allows you to keep your songs when you cancel your service. Any help will be appreciated.

What services are available to people with hospital bills that have gone to a bill collector?
Q. I'm thinking of those places that advertise on TV and say "this is not a loan or debt consolidation, we negotiate with your creditors", etc. Do any of these places help people with hospital bills that have gone to a bill collector? If so, any info on these services would be very helpful.

A. Medical bills are unsecured debts. You can pay what you can (say, $25 a month)...a judge will look at that if the hospital sues you and laugh at them.

At least two other ways (apart from deposits and contracts) that cat sitting services place liability on the pet owner in the case that there is a flea infestation (of staff and premises) from a client's cat. 2.) How much they charge the client for a deposit to cover possible flea infestation. Please identify your sources.

A. I would keep a supply of Advantage or Frontline on hand for owners that have not treated their animals. Have the owner sign a contract agreeing to the fact that their pet has been treated by a flea killing product such as the two afore mentioned items. If it is found that the cat is infested with fleas, then the owner will be required to pay for a tube of the product at say, $25.00 a tube, a bath for the cat at the groomers price, and flea treament of the premises by a reputable company. Make certain that they understand this clearly by reciting it to them before you have them sign. So many people sign stuff and never read it and then are shocked at what they signed. Lastly, I am sure you have already thought of the vaccinations, but make… [cont.]

Services which help me to build custom furnitures are call what?
Q. Are there such services where people help me to build my own custom designed furnitures? I mean I will design my own table and stuff and they help me to build according to my requirements? What do these services call? Carpenters? Nowadays people just get furnitures off the usual shops and don't really do their own.

A. 'Bespoke' means tailored to your needs, or made to measure. You want bespoke furniture from a Joiner, carpenter (though technically they build big with wood) or a cabinet-maker. If you are wanting to make it yourself then look for furniture designers to help with measurements and specification.

Is denying a client services because they do not speak English illegal?
Q. I work for a non-profit that offers housing for homeless families. It has an application process that requires an interview with the case manager. She doesn't speak spanish, so when spanish speaking clients inquire about their status in the program, she claims that she can't help them. I'm bilingual and have offered to assist, but she insists that it wasn't necessary. I've asked if she's considered hiring a transilator and again she insists that it was not necessary. It just doesn't seem right that they deny people services because of a language barrier.

A. Whether it's legal depends on the laws of your state. Whether it's efficient is another matter. Why don't YOU prepare a sign in Spanish advising clients that no translations are available and applicants must bring someone who speaks Spanish with them.

Are county health and human social services primarily only for women, children and the elderly?
Q. I am working class and couldn t afford mental health services for counseling on my own. I called county social services but unless I was a police code 5150, there didn t seem to be any social services counseling. Instead the primary chunk of social services seemed geared only towards mothers with children, children themselves, the chronically homeless, addicts, or the elderly. Is it a mistake for childless adult males, who aren t suicidal but need mental health counseling, to seek county services?
Asked by doggy_dog_gone - Wed Dec 31 17:37:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's never a mistake to try. Whether you qualify depends on your county. Usually there are some public mental health programs. For some, you have to be on public assistance. It depends a lot on where you are. I think you are in CA because you reference a CA police code. Look for the number for mental health services in your county. If they say you don't qualify, ask for referrals to other low cost providers- they should have phone numbers. Consider looking outside of public services, too. Often, clinics associated with universities will offer discounted/sliding scale services. Some non-profits also offer sliding scale fees. I worked for a CA non-profit in the high desert that offered services by intern therapists (Master's… [cont.]

How do other church services differ from Catholic church services?
Q. How are other church services like Lutheran, Episcopal, Baptist, and Evangelical services differ from a Traditional Catholic church service?
Asked by cram_141 - Sun Nov 2 19:02:06 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Anglican and Episcopal churches themselves are the closest Protestant equivalents to the Catholic Church, although the Methodists do share some similarities, too. They differ from the Catholics mainly in that they do not recognize the authority of the sitting Pope as any other than a priest--no holier or better than others. There are other theological differences, as well, such as the ability of priests to marry and less emphasis on the veneration of saints.

Q. I live in Los Angeles, so if you can have specific examples that will be great. But you can also provide general examples of some Community services.

A. Ideally you'd want to do community service that's meaningful to you. I see that you enjoy sports, so volunteering for a youth sports league would be good. If you're into technology, try to find one of those groups that's into "bridging the digital divide" and provides access to computers to the disadvantaged. Really so long as it's meaningful to you, then you're in good shape.

A. That sounds like a good idea. You might want to consider a few things: You could make the project completely Internet based. Your service could send out emails in the form of a generic cover letter. The form could state a person's intentions in generic terms and say that a personal message will be coming later. You could also provide a chat room where the jilted could commiserate with each other. It might be different to make the whole process transparent so that everyone who visits your site could see the interchange of ideas and conflicts. In fact, the other users could provide their own ideas about reconciliation or retribution. Personally, I wouldn't have the temerity to use such a service, but it may be that the time is right… [cont.]

What is it about medical services that usualyy allows the supplier to determine the demand?
Q. Contrary to conventional ecomonmics, physicans(the suppliers) typically decide the quantity and type of health care services to their paients(demanders)will purchase.
Asked by mets5115 - Sat Jun 9 11:22:07 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Part of the reason is asymmetric information. The suppliers are in the position of knowing more about what the consumers might need. This is no different from a person who is unfamiliar with plumbing calling a plumber and having the plumber tell them what they need. The plumber can take advantage of this by overstating what is needed. The effects of this can be lessened by getting quotes from other plumbers. Since reputation is important in plumbing, the market may also sort out the good plumbers from those that tend to overstate the problem. Another piece of the puzzle is the existence of medical insurance. Since many people are covered by medical insurance, the incentive to investigate what is needed is lessened. Using the plumber… [cont.]
