Conservatism (Latin: conservare, "to preserve") is a political and social philosophy that promotes the maintenance of traditional institutions and opposes rapid change in society. Some conservatives seek to preserve things as they are, emphasizing stability and continuity, while others oppose modernism and seek a return to "the way things were." The first established use of the term in a political context was by François-René de Chateaubriand in 1819, following the French Revolution. The term has since been used to describe a wide range of views. According to Hailsham, a former chairman of the British Conservative Party, "Conservatism is not so much a philosophy as an attitude, a constant force, performing a timeless function in the development of a free society, and corresponding to a deep and permanent requirement of human nature itself".

Robert Eccleshall states, "It is the persistent image of society as a command structure in which the responsibilities of leadership can be exercised within the framework of a strong state manifested in divine-right royalism ... that distinguishes English conservatism from rival ideologies."

Political science often credits British politician Edmund Burke with many of the ideas now called conservative.

Conservative political parties include the Liberal Democratic Party in Japan, the Republican Party in the United States, the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom, the Liberal Party of Australia, the Kuomintang of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Conservative Party of Canada, Pakistan Muslim League in Pakistan, and the Bharatiya Janata Party in India.

How come religion has to go with fiscal conservatism?
Q. I think most people would like fiscal conservatism, but are democrats because of the social issues... Don't like the idea of blending religion with politics. Why do these things have to go together?

A. Religion doesn't have to go with fiscal conservatism. The left just paints conservatives as a group of far right religious wack jobs. It is as accurate as painting democrats with the Daily Kos/Moveon.com wack job brush. I am a conservative AND an atheist.

Why the sudden surge of conservatism in this country if conservatism is dead?
Q. Why is conservatism gaining so much momentum in this country, when barely a year ago liberals were insisting that "hope won", that conservatism had been defeated once and for all, and that republicans were now irrelevant?

A. Conservatism is very much alive and active. Conservatives are good for America, but they are no longer silent, nor are they "tame". Conservatives don't win because they appeal to moderates... they win because they stand true to their core, fundamental beliefs. Check out www.themountvernonstateme nt.com This statement is being signed today (2/17/10). The Mount Vernon Statement is a document in which the conservative movement will reaffirm its commitment to Constitutional Conservatism and the principles of the Declaration of Independence: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This will be a significant moment as social, fiscal, and national security conservatives come together to declare the importance of working together to… [cont.]

Why is there a tie to jingoism, conservatism and radical Christianity?
Q. You've seen the kinds of people I mean, always trumpeting loudly that they've got the TRUTH. Now, not living in the US, I don't encounter people like this in real life. So I'm wondering why it is that those three things seem so closely intertwined. Is it a strict fundamentalist Christian upbringing, for example, that contributes to social conservatism, and in turn an intense nationalism? Or in some other combination? I apologize in advance for being a little naive on this subject.

A. If they shout it loud enough, they can quiet the fear that they really don't have the truth, or even care about the truth at all. It's all related to authoritarianism. Check out the work of Robert Altemayer. He's posted his book on authoritarians on the web as a public service.

Conservatism is a philosophy defined by Edmund Burke as "a disposition to preserve, and an ability to improve". The term derives from conserve; from Latin conservare, to keep, guard, observe. Classical conservatism does not readily avail itself to the ideology of objectives. It is a philosophy primarily concerned with means over ends. To a conservative, the goal of change is less important than the insistence that change be effected with a respect for the rule of law and traditions of society.
