What could the answer to this crossword puzzle part be?
Q. I'm doing a crossword puzzle on classic literature, and one of the words is something I just can't remember from Lord of the Flies. There are 5 letters in this word. The first letter is S, and the fourth letter is R. The clue is "This foreshadows Simon's death." Any ideas what it is? I know that when the LOF said "We're going to have some fun" that foreshadowed Simon's death, but that obviously doesn't fit in the blanks. I need some help!
Asked by Zoe - Wed Nov 5 16:48:13 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Simon's death is foreshadowed by the boys killing the pig. After they kill the pig, the boys leave the its head on a sharpened stake in the jungle as an offering to the beast. So I think the word you're looking for might be "spire", which is a synonym for stake.

Where can I find a crossword puzzle online that focuses on vernacular, rather than trivia?
Q. I suck at trivia, but I love guessing at words. Most crosswords have some questions like that, like "four letter word for 'ship'" but most puzzles only have a few. I'd like to know if there are any that focus on words. Let me know, even if it's not an online puzzle.

A. Well, I'd call vernacular a type of trivia. Which vernacular are you talking about? Occupational? Age group (if yes, young or old)? In the biz, I think what you're asking for is "straight clueing", where the answer are fill-in-the-blanks or "what's a X-letter word that means ___" vs. the usual trivia stuff. The Everything Easy Large-Print Crosswords Book by Adams Media is one of the books I know of designed to avoid trivia and agism in the clueing. So, it should work for both young and old, while avoiding trivia. It should be available in bookstores everywhere. While not mentioned in the book, it was designed so that a person with mild Alzheimer's would still have access despite the loss and trivia references. There is a slight… [cont.]
