A lawyer, according to Black's Law Dictionary, is "a person learned in the law; as an attorney, counsel or solicitor; a person licensed to practice law." Law is the system of rules of conduct established by the sovereign government of a society to correct wrongs, maintain the stability of political and social authority, and deliver justice. Working as a lawyer involves the practical application of abstract legal theories and knowledge to solve specific individualized problems, or to advance the interests of those who retain (i.e., hire) lawyers to perform legal services.

The role of the lawyer varies significantly across legal jurisdictions, and so it can be treated here in only the most general terms. More information is available in country-specific articles (see below).

What can a lawyer do for me if i just got a speeding ticket while on deferred disposition?
Q. I live in Texas and got a ticket 2 months ago and was granted deferred disposition meaning that if i do not get another ticket with in 90 days it will be dismissed... however i just received another... i have heard of people paying a lawyer to possibly "work deals" with the judges to get something dismissed or reduced... anyone know what a lawyer could possibly do for me? Is it worth it?

A. You pretty much got your deal with the deferred dispostion. I used to be a law student, and from what I can tell you your best bet is to accept responsibility for what you did. Once you get a deal like that and you mess up again, a judge is going to be much less likely to want to give you another chance because in his eyes you already got a second chance and you kind of messed it up. A lawyer will charge you more than what it is worth (remember for them they won't do anything unless the make some money), and you will probbaly still end up paying a fine. Call the judge and see if you can talk to him yourself, accept responsiblity, admit you messed up, and maybe lighten up on the foot a little bit. Good luck to you.

My lawyer says I need to send a demand to a credit card company that's reporting false information?
Q. He's not my lawyer for this matter, but told me I need to send a demand to my credit card company for reporting false information to the credit bureaus. I have already disputed it without success. What is a demand letter? Where could I find a copy of one?

A. A demand letter simply states the information they have reported that is incorrect and demands that it be corrected. There is no set form that this has to take, just something along the lines of Dear Credit Card Company; You have made the following false report on my credit record dated... and stating...Demand is hereby made pursuant to the law of this state that you correct your false statements within thirty days of receipt of this demand. Failure to comply will result in this matter being referred to the proper authorities for legal action against you. Your Signature.

Lawyers are people who practice law. In most countries, lawyers enter their profession through a period of specialized study. Lawyers are a frequent target of criticism, in part because they are often the public face of unscrupulous parties such as persons being tried for crimes, because they employ a specialized jargon which makes it difficult for persons without a legal education to receive the benefits of the legal system without hiring a lawyer, and because they make up a disproportionate percentage of politicians.
